NGAM LAR-C

LAR-C is Mjolner’s platform-protection system based on nano-gradient metal-ceramic architecture, developed for defence applications where added protection must be achieved with minimal weight growth and minimal disruption to the host platform.

 

Designed for direct retrofit, LAR-C is supplied as ultra-thin prefabricated panels or sheets for integration onto existing armour structures. The system is intended to improve ballistic performance, preserve mobility, and reduce the mass burden associated with conventional add-on protection.

Program Status: Baseline validated, final validation imminent.

Enhanced Platform Survivability

LAR-C uses the existing hull or structure as a hard support layer. The outer LAR-C layer is designed to disrupt and slow the threat before the residual penetrator reaches the host armour, increasing overall protection with relatively low added weight.

REPLACING LEGACY 
ADDON ARMOUR

  • LAR-C panel thickness: 3-4mm. 

  • Total kit weight: 17-30kg/m².

  • LAR-C requires nohull redesign, mounting kits, standoff or other modifications. Bolt/rivet/weld directly onto platform hull in the field or at forward workshops.

DIRECT
ENHANCMENT

  • Standard light vehicle hulls made from ~5 mm RHA (STANAG Level 1) or 11mm construction steel can be upgraded to STANAG K3 with LAR-C . 

  • Light vehicle hulls with ~11 mm RHA (STANAG Level 2) can be upgraded to 12.7x108mm B32 API / STANAG LK4 with LAR-C.

IFV Weight Optimisation 

  • Enables Infantry Fighting Vehicles to achieve STANAG 4569 Level 4+ ballistic protection while dramatically reducing vehicle curb weight.

Enhanced All-Round Protection for Existing Platforms 

  • Upgrades legacy IFVs and APCs to provide full-coverage STANAG Level 4 hull protection with a minimal increase in mass, removing the need for heavy & bulky ceramic add-on armour kits.

 

Light Vehicle Survivability Upgrade 

  • Elevates light tactical vehicles from STANAG L1 to L3 or L2 to L3+/4 protection using coating alone, delivering substantial survivability improvements without compromising mobility.

ROTORWING SYSTEMS

Current rotorcraft and transport aircraft armour solutions are often limited to small-arms protection, with significant weight penalties.

With LAR-C, there are two upgrade paths:

Weight Reduction

  • Maintain the existing protection level at approximately 40% of the current armour weight, freeing up hundreds of kilograms for payload or fuel.​​

Protection Upgrade

  • Maintain the current weight and significantly increase protection to resist heavy machine-gun and anti-aircraft fire (up to STANAG L4 KE), safeguarding crew, passengers, and critical systems.

NAVAL SYSTEMS

LAR-C enables patrol boats, fast attack craft, and landing vessels to reach STANAG Level 3-4+ KE protection with minimal impact on structure, speed, range, and payload. It also enhances frigates and destroyers against ASM fragmentations.

  • LAR-C panels can be directly mounted onto the external hull surfaces of naval vessels. Low mass, 15+ year life cycle, and strong saltwater resistance.

Rapid, Targeted Hardening

  • High-risk sections such as the bridge, weapon stations, engine bays, power systems, decks, and internal bulkheads can be reinforced quickly and selectively. LAR-C is intended to function as floor and wall addon protection, allowing survivability upgrades without structural modification.

UNMANNED SYSTEMS

For UAVs, UGVs, USVs, and robotic quadrupeds, the coating supercharges the existing hull to resist NIJ3+/VPAM 8 or STANAG K3/K4 threats depending on platform.

  • Mjolner enables easy customization for complex geometries. 

MULTIPLE MOUNTING METHODS

  • Drill & Bolt - Mounting holes can be cut directly through the sheets, enabling secure bolting to hulls, bulkheads, or frames.

  • Rivet & Weld- Panels can be rapidly fitted using rivets or secured by welding for a clean, low-profile attachment where mechanical fasteners are impractical.

DIY & RAPID
REPLACEMENT

  • Rapid Replacement - Post ballistic impact, damaged panels can be removed and replaced to preserve hull armour integrity.

  • Field DIY - The same process can be carried out in the field to cut, fit, and install panels onto other systems, supercharging their protection onsite within hours.
